In an absolute emergency to reach safety, yes. However, water boils at a lower temperature than proper coolant and lacks anti-corrosion properties. The system should be flushed and filled with the correct coolant mixture as soon as possible.
How long does it take for an engine to cool down?
Typically 30 to 45 minutes. Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot — the pressurized, boiling coolant can cause severe burns.
Why does my car only overheat in traffic?
If your car stays cool on the highway but overheats at a standstill, the electric cooling fan or fan relay is likely failing. Highway driving forces air through the radiator naturally, but traffic requires the fan to activate.
